Alexa likes LLLL.coms

Spent the last hour going through Alexa.. Some interesting findings to post:

First, the short domains listed in the Top 500:

#4 live.com
#5 msn.com
#17 qq.com
#18 ebay.com
#19 hi5.com
#20 aol.com
#25 fc2.com
#29 imdb.com
#43 go.com
#50 cnn.com
#51 163.com
#71 sohu.com
#73 56.com
#75 veoh.com
#103 ign.com
#104 bebo.com
#107 ask.com
#110 nba.com
#115 digg.com
#119 aim.com
#132 mop.com
#134 cnet.com
#142 dell.com
#153 888.com
$162 soso.com
#168 icq.com
#180 hp.com
#209 zedo.com
#213 xnxx.com
#229 tom.com
#251 wwe.com
#295 tv.com
#303 ku6.com
#307 126.com
#293 21cn.com
#333 usps.com
#334 att.com
#335 yimg.com
#337 mtv.com

#413 mlb.com
#424 ibm.com
#427 yam.com
#436 rude.com
#449 sify.com
#463 ikea.com
#472 wsj.com

It would seem foolish based on these results to be “Pro-bad LLL.com” and not Pro-LLLL.com as well. Look through the list carefuly — only 2 LLL.coms with more than 1 bad letter are in the Top 500 (wsj.com , wwe.com).

Final Count:

18 LLL.coms
21 LLLL.coms

Thoughts?

  1. Just as its foolish to be pro LLLL.com and not pro-bad LLL.com.

  2. actually, LLLL/LLL is easily brandable.
that is why I guess many people use them to build their sites.

  3. Agree Steven — they both have their place and for the most part target completely different markets.

If we look at a lot of the LLLL.coms on this list, we discover that they’re “Internet Companies” without or with little real world presence.

LLL.coms on the other hand seem to be the choice of big players in the real world, as well as online.

Most LLLL.coms will always be a “cheap alternative” to an LLL.com — an alternative, certainly not a replacement or a downgrade. There’s no reason they can’t coexist and I don’t put extraordinary long term returns beyond either.

  4. You need to look beyond just L count to get a clear picture. One major factor being age of the domain name and this list is less than 10% of total sites in top 500, thus what makes us think that Alexa is pro LLLL?

I would read the data as 93% non LLLL.com show up in Alexa ranking and it is PRO non LLLL.com’s

    Thanks,
